Identity is one big story.
Quote:I think of story telling as feeding people. I'm trying to tell a story, make it taste good, be nourishing. Air, water, food, clothes, shelter, fuel, and medicine are the basic material human needs. After that, it's stories. The need of the soul. Our lives are constructed of stories. Identity is one big story. We devour stories. Sometimes I want stories to be like dining at a great restaurant, like Chez Panisse...or like in Africa, when everyone sits down together around the communal bowl...Lets eat!--- from THIS blog. - NonE "I just don't understand how this happens."

Re: Identity is one big story.
Are we our story or something else, or nothing at all? Easy to ask, hard to answer satisfactorily.

Re: Identity is one big story.
Seems the hard part is that its 'our' story. Where each of us is a map illustrator of 'our' story. Each of our stories then are snapshot maps (mental images) that make up our volume of maps that we call 'the truth'. Hopefully, when compared, each map/illustration in our storybook is almost identical with any others-- at least practically; for putting into practice. In reality, there are so many positions (perspectives) from which to look when processing and then illustrating each map, seldom if not rarely is that the case. Toss in all that's involved in considering any particular 'personal' position (delusion, selfishness, indoctriNation, and even simply the time element, etc) and the less-than-panoramic stories get to having a very kindergarten aspect to them-- at least they should be viewed as such, to the wise one. But of course, this is TRUTH 'we' are dealing with here!! Don't you see that!?! Granted, this four letter word we use, 'life', often requires decisions relative to 'truth'-- the factual as the observed. And so all each of us has is "our" map. And so we-- individually or collectively --are left to examine them, judge, and live (<== another four-letter word) by them. It just seems too often one-- and those of one State of minds united eg "one nation, under god..." --wishes to treat (ie enforce) their map as THE Map. And where that story is considered (or assumed or believed to be, etc) a perfect 3D movie (special 3-D glasses being equally pretended; costumes and images, like uniforms, robs, and badges for the eyes instead) rather than the cartoon it is. Occasionally life inherently requires a story to be The Story. Too often via enforcement, and all that's underneath such (the psychology of it), makes such requirement The Rule & Order of every practically every waking moment-- "The State Of" business; The Story, The Map. <<====Period.

Re: Identity is one big story.
Is Calvin real...?
If not, how did you know of whom (or what) I speak? [in the picture here, why isn't it really Calvin & Pluto?] Am I real...? Is my story real...? Perhaps in exploring this thing called The Story, rather than focusing so much on "truth" one is better off to pursue accuracy... factuality... actuality? Particularly when 'speaking' (aka 'creating') a map... And especially when considering where real action includes the use or threat of violence... be that verbal or physical.
