There's a distinction between ale and beer. Beer is any fermented malt beverage, where ale is a malt beverage fermented between 65 and 80 deg F, with top-fermenting ales, ester flavors being prominent, and spiced with hops. There can be a distinction without implying isolation, where the set or subset of one of the things is a subset of the other. Only in the case where the full set of the first is the full set of the second will no distinction exist.
