Deep Thoughts: belonging just for the sake of belonging?
Quote:The movie's statement is a criticism of blind obedience and a dogmatic world-view, whatever the dogma. It's saying that blind obedience to any ideology, that is, the inability to think for oneself, is seductive, contagious, and toxic. The comfort the Narrator had when he was living his cookie-cutter life didn't just come from the accoutrement of yuppie living, it was the sense of belonging he felt, and his surrender to a popular lifestyle that was shared by others. He found that same comfort in Project Mayhem, but as it was with the yuppie lifestyle, it was false comfort. The scene with Tyler and the Narrator in the car is a great metaphor. Even when he was active in FC and Project Mayhem, the Narrator wasn't "driving" his own life. He was a passenger in his life when he was in FC, just as he was before his "transformation" (when his condo blew up) when he was a slave to corporatism.

- IMDB discussion -- surprisingly wordcount-heavy! -- re. the classic "Fight Club" vs. the recent film "Wanted"

Something each of us perhaps should ponder, when too often we spend way to many hours chatting in online forums Wink

Can't remember where I heard it but the quote "Well, it's better than being lonely by yourself." springs to mind.

I'm much happier being lonely by myself than being lonely with people I can't stand to be with.

"I just don't understand how this happens." Undecided
