Once more, Somalia is making an attempt to break the spiral of anarchy, violence and poverty it has been trapped in for almost two decades. The new Government, the thirteenth in 18 years, which started work in Mogadishu last week, is facing almost insurmountable obstacles.

Somalia's capital is arguably the most dangerous place in the world. Moving even small distances is risking machinegun fire, roadside bombs, mortar attacks and land mines.

The Prime Minister, who is also Secretary General of the Somali Red Crescent Society, has survived two attacks on his residence in just one week.

His 18 ministers live and run their ministries with money sent by relatives, or investments set up abroad while in exile.

The new government has no budget, no army or police to speak of, no offices, no water or electricity, no schools, hospitals or industries.

It is confronted with a starving and unemployed population, one million of whom are displaced.

On top of that, it is faced with an insurgency by Islamists who oppose the presence of Ethiopian troops and want to impose a Taliban-version of an Islamic state.

But more dangerous are the Shabab, uncontrolled youth who benefit from the chaos and do not want any government at all.

The new team of extremely motivated people, who are ready to sacrifice their lives for their people, deserves all our support.
The African Union needs to come up with the 8,000 troops needed to secure the capital. So far, only Uganda and Burundi have sent soldiers-- 2,400 in all.

The international community has to strengthen and support the Somali Police and other security institutions to allow the government operate and aid workers reach the displaced.

Uganda has been training some Somali police and army officers but it has limited resources, and donor funds have not been forthcoming.

And the UN agencies and other humanitarian organisations, which have been spending millions of dollars meant for Somalia in their headquarters in Nairobi, should finally move to Mogadishu and do the work they are paid for.

There is no more excuse for sitting back and allowing an entire population to be slowly but steadily exterminated.

The time of empty promises and good-sounding solidarity declarations is over. This is the time to act.

Heh heh heh.  Do I hear global political interests rustling the leaves behind the hut?  First it was the British Empire screwing with Africans, now it's the U.S. Empire.  Sure will be nice all around when this one collapses, too.  I hope the Chinese don't then take over.  But it's only black peoples lives and blood, so nothing to be terribly concerned about.  (That was SERIOUS SARCASM, in case there is any confusion on the issue.)

Also anyone notice the casual, almost accidental mention of the "African Union" wtf? United currency and police force yet? or are they just working on it... Damn you anarchist-hearted Somalians, bend over and submit to the coercive violence that we are trying to impose on you in the name of peace and safety! +_+
