When I first read Spooner I thought he was trying to make too much of the secret ballot. I see now that it is a significant corrupting factor in democracy because people are naturally more inclined to abuse power when they know they will not be held accountable. That's true for senators and it's true for voters.

I don't hold that public accountability would fix democracy any more than it would fix the Senate. The real problem is much deeper. The real problem is that the power wielded by voters and their representatives is fundamentally illegitimate in principle. But secrecy facilitates the abuse of that power.

Voting bears a strong relationship to "rooting" for a sports team; It doesn't affect the outcome of the game, but it's something to do.

Spooner is the clearest writer on the murky subject of voting, and it certainly goes against the grain to question the underlying assumptions of politics as he does. Our modern civic religion insists upon our participation in ballot-boxing, but it’s not justified. There are many traditions which take a much different path, and these lead to a libertarian vision of a free society wherein people are interconnected through tradition, compact and contract with coercion either minimized or eliminated completely. Let me expound on a prominent one: Calvinism.

...Living under a sinful government (and this certainly includes all governments to one extent or other) leaves a Christian obligated to one of two alternatives: 1) breaking the government of sin through resistance/overthrow or secession; or 2) turning your back on all contact with government. The first alternative is that of a revolutionary response and clearly one of the reasons for the support of the American Revolutionary War. The second response, shunning, was practiced by many of the members Reformed Churches, although now mostly by Amish, Mennonites and Doukobors.

This second response was a fundamental underpinning of why the Reformation is responsible for the phenomenal rise of the prosperity in countries where Protestantism was prominent. Not through participation in the government, but through avoiding and ignoring the state, not participating or supporting the government in any way possible.

Read Lysander Spooner's letters to so-called "elected representatives". Search online for "don't vote!" or "why i don't vote" and soon you'll see WHY it's all a scam -- even back in the day of "paper ballots" etc. Anyone claiming to be a "public servant" is exercising power "on behalf of his constituents" which every one of those individual constituents DO NOT THEMSELVES POSSESS, AS INDIVIDUALS.

Any "government agent" acts on nobody's behalf but his own.

Govern (control) yourself and your life, and STOP controlling others -- and that especially includes when you "vote" others into that fraudulent role.
