Who could vote in 1790's in the US
I hope this will be beginning to a discussion on the morals of the founding fathers. Please let every post be informative.
I recently read an article written by Michael Parenti's. (1) He mentions that only property-owning White males could vote. I did a little searching and discovered that statement was correct and that amounted to "about 10 to 16 percent of the nation's population" (2) This amount is reminiscent of the time of Athens were only 10% of the population ruled the rest. Is this information correct? Is this evidence to the founders had elitist values? 1 - A Constitution for the Few: Looking Back to the Beginning; http://www.iefd.org/articles/constitutio...he_few.php 2 - U.S. Voting Rights; http://www.infoplease.com/timelines/voting.html |
